Proteinuria & Hematuria
Workup and management of abnormal protein or blood in the urine to identify underlying kidney conditions before significant damage occurs.
What is Proteinuria & Hematuria?
Protein or blood in the urine are important early warning signs of kidney disease. A thorough nephrological evaluation is essential to identify the underlying cause — from benign conditions to serious glomerular disease — and begin treatment before significant kidney damage occurs.
Signs & Symptoms
- Foamy or bubbly urine (protein)
- Pink, red, or brown urine (blood)
- Microscopic blood found on routine urinalysis
- Persistent protein detected on urine dipstick
- No obvious explanation (e.g., not from a UTI or menstruation)
How We Treat Proteinuria & Hematuria
We conduct a systematic and thorough workup to identify the source and significance of abnormal urine findings and prevent progression.
- Quantification with spot urine protein-to-creatinine ratio or 24-hour urine collection
- Urine microscopy for red cell casts and dysmorphic cells
- Imaging of the kidneys and urinary tract
- Kidney biopsy when clinically indicated
- Treatment directed at the confirmed underlying cause
- Ongoing surveillance to detect any progression
