Home dialysis is a self-managed treatment approach where patients and their care partners conduct hemodialysis within their residence. This option can offer independence and flexibility for motivated individuals with strong health literacy and adequate family support systems.
Similar to peritoneal dialysis, home dialysis places treatment responsibility on the patient. The process demands careful technique training to minimize infection risks and other potential complications. Consulting with your HKSC physician helps determine whether this treatment path aligns with your medical needs.
HKSC provides comprehensive on-site training covering access site care, needle placement techniques, and other essential skills for safe home dialysis management.
Access Site Monitoring and Care Guidelines
Maintaining a healthy dialysis access site is fundamental to successful home treatment. You and your care partner share primary responsibility for monitoring and preserving access integrity. Follow these essential guidelines:
- A healthy exit site remains dry, clean, without redness or discomfort
- Daily cleaning and monitoring prevent serious complications
- Skin surrounding the exit should show no redness or swelling
- Any drainage at the exit site indicates possible infection and requires immediate physician notification
- Small scabs may form at the exit site; do not remove them — your care team will provide specific instructions
- The exit site should remain pain-free
- Regularly palpate the catheter tunnel beneath the skin to detect swelling or tenderness
- Inspect catheter and adapter regularly for cracks that could allow bacterial contamination
- Secure the catheter end to skin or dressing to prevent tension and pulling
- Shower daily following treatment and maintain clean clothing
- Avoid applying lotions, powders, or creams without physician approval
